INTERMEDIATE LEVEL KIT
A Peter Rake design airplane featured in Flying Scale Models as a free plan issue.
The Sopwith Camel has always been a favorite WWI fighter. Gained a reputation as being very hard to fly because of the
original airplane's tendency to kill it's pilot. The large rotary power plant was the key problem with the full size Camel,
requiring a deft touch with the motor switch. Models of the Camel, if balanced properly, are fairly tame to fly as long as
you don't hit a bump when landing and nose it over. :)
Pete's design follows his classic approach to building and makes the process straightforward. Gerald's build of the prototype
shows what can be accomplished by adding some scale details to the kit.
The design power package is the Olympus geared sp400. With the 2.33:1 ratio and a 10x7 prop the prototype flew well on
8x1100 NiMh battery pack. My personal Camel had an EFlite450 brushless outrunner with 3s2100LiPo power packs. Installation
was simple and performance outstanding.
Control is 4 channel with ailerons in all four wing panels. Moderate aerobatics are possible, loops, barrel rolls, snap
rolls, and wing overs can be performed easily.
We also offer a full kit of the Camel that includes the wire, stick, sheet and foam necessary to complete the kit. We
also neoprene cord for the tires, pink foam for carved parts, and a vacuum formed WWI engine for the cowl. Crude instructions
are also included for those who need a little help in getting going.
